Wonder Woman 1984 became the first big budget DC film to simultaneously play in theaters and on HBO MAX. While many in the industry, and those involved in the film were livid, AT&T flexed their muscles, and it is what it is. But moving ahead, it looks like HBO MAX will be the home of DC films that might not have much of a draw in the theaters like Batgirl, which Joss Whedon was attached to for a short time, and Static Shock, who made his animated debut during the heyday of the DC animated universe, which is arguably the best shared universe, including the MCU and DCEU. The New York Times reports that up to four expensive DC movies per year will be released in theaters starting in 2022, while riskier properties like Batgirl and Static Shock will premier exclusively on HBO MAX.
